PHD Position: Electrical ENgineering, Netherland

The Netherlands: PhD Positions at Dept. of Electrical Eng., The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven

The Department of Electrical Engineering concerns the research and education of the Electrical Engineering discipline. Electrical Engineering covers the application of electrical phenomena with respect to energy transfer, telecommunication, and calculation and processing of information and the technology involved. Both hardware, in the form of electronic circuits and accessories, and software, in the form of system software for electro-technical application, are the subject of study. Existing and new electrical components and systems are analyzed, designed and realized. In addition, the maintenance of these systems is the subject of research, as is the relevance for society of electrical engineering and informatics.

These two vacant Ph. D. student positions are in the Electro-Optical Communication Systems (ECO) group, part of the COBRA Research Institute, in the Department of Electrical Engineering of Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. In the ECO group, research is done in the area of optical fibre communication networks and their supporting techniques, ranging from ultra-high capacity long distance transport and ultra-fast optical signal processing to versatile broadband user access.

Tasks
Future homes will have a broad spectrum of communication systems and applications, ranging from low-bitrate terminals for e.g. temperature sensing and fire alarms to high-bitrate terminals for e.g. personal computing and multimedia services. The trend of personal distributed environments with ambient intelligence will require not only wireless communication using various standards (IEEE 802.11.x, 802.15, 802.16, and new high-frequency systems at e.g. 17 and 60 GHz) to the terminals themselves, but also an intelligent backbone network in the house for selective interconnection and routing.

The goal of the project is to conceive, design, realise and test a network concept for such future home networks in which a multitude of wireless communication standards are supported, and intelligent functionalities are built in. The project is part of the IOP Generieke Communicatie programme of Senter-Novem (see http://www.senter.nl/iop-gencom), and is executed in co-operation with TU Delft. The TU/e ECO group will study optical fibre communication techniques for the physical home network infrastructure - the higher-layer issues such as mobility, resource management, self-configuration etc. will be addressed by TU Delft. The two PhD tasks in TU/e ECO need to focus respectively on techniques for transporting multi-standard wireless signals in an optical fibre backbone infrastructure, and techniques for transparently routing these signals by optical means in response to traffic demands and quality of service criteria.

Requirements
Candidates for this challenging project should have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or in Applied Physics. He/she should have a strong affinity with optical and wireless communication techniques, and preferably some hands-on experience with optical fibre systems and electronic circuits.

Appointment and Salary
The appointment is for four years. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent secondary benefits (holiday allowance, etc.). The research in this project must be concluded with the attainment of a PhD degree. A salary is offered starting at Euro 1877,00 per month (gross) in the first year and increasing up to Euro 2407,00 per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover 8% bonus share (holiday supplement) is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given.
